Coming up in August is our August Education Program with Jennifer Hopwood, a Senior Pollinator Conservation Specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. She has authored numerous publications on pollinator ecology and coauthored several books (including Farming with Native Beneficial Insects and 100 Plants to Feed the Bees).
People often think of honeybees when they think of bees. However, honeybees are actually an introduced bee from Europe. There are thousands of species of native bees in the United States, each with their own unique way of living with preferred flowers and nesting sites. These native bees are also incredible pollinators of crops, especially crop plants native to North America. Many of these native bees rely on a small number of flower species to complete their life cycle. Jennifer will talk about why native bees are important, what requirements they have to complete their unique life cycles, and what people can do to promote interesting and beneficial native bees in our human communities.
