Monthly Program - Virtual Garden Tour by the Cheap and Lazy Gardener

Scott Bartlett, a self-described “Cheap and Lazy Gardener,” has been a master gardener in New Mexico and arrived here in Bellevue 2 years ago. He is frugal and modest in ambitions as he works on his long-term backyard garden project.

In these 2 years, his backyard has blossomed with a variety of plant species and that have increased the number of species of bees from what may have been just one, honeybees, to a couple dozen species. (Scott is working on the list of his more common visitors!)

Scott has also witnessed populations of hummingbirds that have stayed for the summer months and an increase in the migrating populations in early spring and fall. By ensuring there are always blooms available throughout the spring, summer and fall months this can help reduce the stress these pollinators can experience during their hunt for food. Butterflies have also been a source of inspiration for the different types of flowering plants and serve as the major focus for next year's improvements.

Besides his own gardens Scott is a biology teacher at Omaha South where he works with the Science Department and the South High Green Club which has adopted the school’s pollinator garden. The South High Green Club will be focusing on educating students and will be working on several other Green initiatives.
