Foraging for Wild Mushrooms w/ Bob Henrickson

Bellevue University John B. Muller Administrative Building: Symposium Room

Nebraska is home to a wide variety of mushrooms. While there are thousands of different types of mushrooms in the state, this presentation focuses on the most common edible species found and foraged in Nebraska. It is important to note that wild mushrooms should never be consumed unless properly identified, as there are poisonous species that can make you sick. With that said, let’s explore the fascinating and flavorsome world of wild edible mushrooms in Nebraska.

About Bob Henrickson:
Bob attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a B.S. in Wildlife Biology in the School of Natural Resources. Currently, Bob is the Horticulture Program Coordinator with the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Inc., a private, non-profit organization and program of the Nebraska Forest Service. His responsibilities include assisting affiliated arboretum sites with plant collection development and to acquire, propagate and produce native and exotic plants for plant sales to our members and the public. A Nebraska Certified Nurseryman and a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture. Bob has hosted a live, call-in gardening talk show called How’s it Growin’ on a community radio station in Lincoln since 2000. He is passionate about native plants, herbs, dried flowers, vegetable gardening, wild mushrooms and wild edible plants.

Trailhead Rain Garden Cleanup Days

Trailhead Rain Garden Cleanup Days

Come help Bellevue Native Plant Society as we rid the rain garden of poison hemlock, foxtail, hops, and rogue tree seedlings. We also do a sweep for litter to prevent trash from ending up in the waterways.

The Twin Creek Trailhead is at the intersection of three major biking trails in the Metro: The Bellevue Loop, The West Papio Trail, and the Keystone Trail. This rain garden is a great opportunity to showcase native plants to the various bikers that pass by yearly as well as making this spot a scenic hub of the community.

Dress for wading through brush with closed toe shoes. Hemlock is toxic and the hops are spiky, so we like to wear good thick garden gloves, long sleeves, and long pants. Please bring your own hand shovel or spade to use and your own pruners or loppers. If you have yard waste bags to use or trash bags to collect litter and you bring these, it is MUCH appreciated.

This is not the event for young children unless they are aware of the dangers and supervised at all times. We've done this work safely for years, it's just good to be aware of what we are working with.

Come help us make sure this kind of work decreases over the years as the many grasses and wildflowers we plant take hold and convert this space into a much more lively, native, and wildlife-supporting garden. See you soon!

Composting in the Lunch Room & Household

YouTube Live stream: https://youtube.com/live/jbow_iotPxI?feature=share

Most assume food waste in a landfill breaks down into dirt. But actually, it creates a toxic planet-killing methane factory. The solution is composting. But what is composting? Why do we do it? And how can you start composting today? We’ll explore those answers, as well as hear about the new composting program coming to Bellevue West High School.

About the Speaker
Brent Crampton is the Director of Partnerships with Hillside Solutions — an eco-friendly recycling and composting company based in Omaha, Nebraska. From Conagra, First National Bank, to Gallup, they partner with some of Omaha’s top companies to help them divert their waste from the landfill.
